The Mize Family
On July 1st, 2008 our son Matheu was born with Bladder Exstrophy, a rare birth defect that leaves the bladder under developed and outside the body. In addition, the pelvic bone, penis, sphincter, urethra and other members of the region were under developed and or in need of repair. This condition occurs in 1:50,000 births.
The defect was undetected during an otherwise normal pregnancy. The evening of his birth, Matheu was flown by medical transport from Reno to San Francisco where he spent the next eleven days and received his first major surgery at three days old.
Matheu underwent another surgery in January of 2009 as Justin (Matheu’s father) received a 40% decrease in salary.
In February of 2009, due to the hard-hitting crisis in the construction industry, Justin was laid off from the company he had worked for over ten years. This was our family's sole source of income.
In light of these circumstances, we are not doing poorly enough to get the assistance we need from government agencies in spite of the fact that we have contributed to them for over twenty years.
Two more surgeries will be needed for Matheu in the next couple of years at best. As the medical bills piled up and we had no means to even make minimum payments, Heidi (Matheu’s mom) decided to begin pursuing a fundraiser on his behalf. As we began letting people know a remarkable thing happened. God is never late! Our sister in law happened to work for an organization that works with Faith's Hope! An organization for people just like us, who believe just like us.
Our strength is renewed, as we are confident that all these things will continue to work together for “good”.
